A Smallish March: Finding Joy in Everyday Moments

March felt like a teeny tiny quiet return to creativity.

Nothing dramatic. Just small moments of trying, noticing, learning, and slowly welcoming a new season.

Gouache & Letting Go of Perfection

I spent a good chunk of this month experimenting with gouache, practicing one small painting at a time and remembering how satisfying it feels to try something new without expecting perfection. A loose, joyful strawberry study. A big leafy tropical plant with a periwinkle background. Nothing gallery-worthy or perfect. Just pure creation and fun.

My "get it right" brain doesn't always love the learning curve, but the sketchbook doesn't care. It just holds the evidence that I showed up and tried. And that counts.

Creativity is Contagious (Apparently)

After watching me film some of my art projects, Isaac decided he wanted to make his own video too. I set up my phone on my Canvas lamp and helped him film a how-to LEGO video, completely on his own, completely his idea. I didn't suggest it. I didn't plan it. He just wanted to create something for “his” YouTube channel.

I love that so much. Apparently creativity is contagious.

Isaac's Shotokan Chapter Begins

Isaac started Shotokan karate this month. It’s the same style I practiced almost 30 years ago. I remember what it taught me: Discipline. Concentration. Focus. Persistence (so much persistence!) The previous class he tried was nice, but it didn't quite have the depth or structure I was hoping for. Shotokan is different. It asks more of you, in the best way.

Watching him begin this new chapter feels especially meaningful, knowing firsthand how much this practice can shape a person. My momma heart is so happy. Small steps toward strength. Big lessons in perseverance.

The Neighbors, the Book, the Party

Our neighborhood book club met this month to discuss The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid, and honestly? It turned into such a fun afternoon. I've been genuinely, pleasantly surprised by how much I've enjoyed getting to know the people around us and becoming part of this community.

Connection really can grow in small ways. A book. A living room. Some snacks and plenty of wine!

Spring is Whispering

Outside, the early signs are finally here!!!! Tiny sprouts have started pushing through the mulch, quietly doing their thing. I’ve been stalking them and photographing them nearly every day now. After the long grey of winter, even a little green tip feels like a promise. I can’t wait to see all the bulbs that Isaac and I planted in full bloom!

I also made a trip to Platt Hill Nursery just to wander and dream a little. I left feeling so ready for spring and planting and full of SO MANY IDEAS!

Small adventures don't always look exciting in the traditional sense. Sometimes they look like trying something new, staying curious, building discipline, connecting with neighbors, noticing the seasons change, and appreciating everyday life.

A smallish March. Full in its own quiet way. 🌷
